Purpose

This project was undertaken as part of course EDUC 4153 - Elementary Instructional Techniques II - Summer, 1998 at Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Students and professor worked both collaboratively and cooperatively to develop what they believe to be a great resource for Social Studies teachers in Texas.

The twenty-seven students enrolled in the course divided themselves into groups of three, each group representing grades K-8. Their task was to develop a resource that focused on active learning lesson plans, activities and information. The resources they gathered were to be evaluated in relation to the Social Studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

This ongoing project demonstrates the many ways in which students can be actively involved in their learning of the social studies TEKS. Using the ideas collected via the World Wide Web and  instructional software, students can see how history, economics, geography, and technology play an important role in their education as a learner in the twenty-first century.

Throughout the project work, the members of the class were challenged to keep in mind the purpose of Social Studies education as designated by the National Council for the Social Studies.

"The goal of Social Studies Education is to promote civic competence. The primary purpose is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as a citizen of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world."
