The year 2008

May 12-28, 2008:
Symposium “Anorthosites to Rapakivi Granites: a Tribute to the Career of Ronald F. Emslie” at the GAC-MAC-SEG-SGA joint annual meeting in Quebec, Canada. IGCP-510 will sponsor the Ronald F. Emslie memorial symposium that will be convened by Mike Hamilton (University of Toronto), James Scoates (University of British Columbia), and Tapani Rämö (University of Helsinki) and held in Quebec City on May 26-28 (GAC-MAC 2008.pdf). We encourage participation from IGCP-510 participants in this symposium that will honor one of the pioneers of A-type granite research. The deadline for abstract submission is January 20, 2008. Please note also that, because of the Quebec City 2008 anniversary, it will be advisable to make lodging arrangements as soon as possible. For further information, please log on to www.quebec2008.net

August 1-5, 2008:
Field trip to the classic alkaline Paleozoic anorogenic rocks of the Oslo rift, immediately preceding the 33IGC in Oslo. The trip will be led by Tom Andersen (University of Oslo; tom.andersen@geo.uio.no) and it will be a joint venture with the Eurogranites (Oslo Rift 2008.pdf). Targets will cover saturated and undersaturated plutonic and volcanic rocks of the rift and their tectonic evolution and associated mineralization (e.g., pre-rift and rift-related geology and tectonics in the Oslo area, the Drammen and Finnemarka granites, intrusive rocks in the Vestfold graben, larvikite). Pre-registration deadline is January 31, 2008; final registration by May 1, 2008.

August 6-14, 2008:
IGCP-510 will arrange a joint session “Granite Classification – a Never-ending Problem” with the IUGC Subcommission of Systematics of Igneous Rocks at the 33rd International Geological Congress in Oslo, Norway. The classification of granite is currently woven around several controversial issues, including the significance of chemical diagrams, the alphabet genetic classification, generation of migmatites vs. granites, and relationships of granites with volcanic rocks. Contributions are solicited in the fields of rock-forming minerals, igneous petrology, experimental petrology, and elemental and isotope geochemistry, in order to provide a more robust frame for granite classification. This session will be chaired by Bernard Bonin (Université de Paris-Sud), Tapani Rämö (University of Helsinki), and Tom Andersen (University of Oslo). The deadline for abstract submission is February 1, 2008. For further information, please log on to www.33igc.org

September 1-7, 2008:
Field trip to the volcanic and plutonic A-type suites of Corsica (Propriano-Bonifatto area). Bernard Bonin (Université de Paris-Sud; bernard.bonin@u-psud.fr) will lead the trip to a classic and outstandingly varied collage of A-type suites: volcanic calderas, layered mafic chambers, and a complete set of felsic rock types ranging from monzonite to syenite to alkali feldspar granite, with hypersolvus to transsolvus to subsolvus alkali feldspar mineralogy, and metaluminous to peraluminous or peralkaline compositions. The trip will be a joint venture with the Eurogranites.

The year 2009

Technical sessions and field trips in Turkey and/or Australia.

The year 2010 (Provisional)

The final annual meeting will be held in Helsinki, Finland with field trips to the Paleo- and Mesoproterozoic A-type granites and related rocks of Finland and adjacent Russia and Sweden. The meeting will conclude the project and solicit papers for a final project publication.
