Chair and Associate Professor of Biology

Education:

Ph.D. Biological Sciences. University of Missouri-Columbia 1988

M.S. Biology. Central Washington University 1984

B.S. Forest Sciences. University of Washington 1977

Joined University in: 1991

Teaching Duties:
General Botany, Systematic Botany, Principles of Biology, Genetics Laboratory, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biology Laboratory

Research Interests:
Molecular analysis of maize photosynthesis mutants; molecular taxonomy of local flora and fauna. My primary interest lies with the molecular analysis of chloroplast development in plants. Students in my laboratory clone and analyze nuclear genes from maize (corn) that are involved in this complex process. Information obtained in the laboratory is used to retrieve related data from other plants using the burgeoning resources available through the internet. I also support research by students who are interested in utilizing the powerful tools of molecular biology to study organisms other than plants.
